Almost Perfect
Today was a good day. Sun and sea and salty air.
A really, really good day.
Well, except for that speeding ticket…I do not want to talk about that.

Have you seen this video?
If only I could have shown such restraint when faced with a 55 mph zone and an encroaching dinner time… but I really don’t want to talk about it.
What I Did on My Summer Vacation: Gone Fishin’
GW’s girl scout troop introduced us to a great fishing pond. We had such a wonderful time, we made W take us back the next week.

Alright, you caught it. Now what are you going to do with it?

Could I get a close-up of that?

Okaaay…moving on.

This was our second trip:

Guess who caught the BIG one? That’s right! In your face! Ahem. I mean…that would be me.

Here’s what GW preferred to catch.

You know that girl I used to have? The shy one? She’s gone now. The new girl is brimming with confidence. Her newt catching skills earned her the admiration of three young amphibian lovers. The other girls were in awe of GW’s quick hands. She was the only one able to snatch newts right from the pond. The girls called themselves the Newt Club. Initiates had to got to kiss a newt! Each one GW caught was well loved before being returned to the pond.

Our fishy friends were not so lucky. They were, however, delicious.
What I Did on My Summer Vacation: Washington Park Zoo
My sister and her family came to visit for a weekend in July. We got wild at the zoo.

Tip for my sister: If you have a bit of a bird phobia, don’t accept a cup of nectar to feed them. Even if your adorable little sister insists. Hee hee hee.

What I Did on My Summer Vacation: Potter-Style
Back in July, after ten months of reading aloud, GW, Harry Potter, and I reached the end of our journey. It was bittersweet, and there were some casualties.
I’m not talking about those unfortunate characters that fell victim to the Death Eaters. Oh no. Hermione fell from grace once she and Ron finally kissed. After months of pretending to be Hermione nearly everyday, GW declared that she would be her no more. In fact, she didn’t even want to be a Gryffindor. She declared herself a Ravenclaw and created a Luna Lovegood costume to wear to the Harry Potter 6 movie.

Last week, GW reconciled with her alter ego and Hermione returned to our lives.
I have to admit, I have missed her.
What I Did on My Summer Vacation
There is a slight chill in the air.
The morning light has taken on that early fall golden hue.
The rains have returned.
Yes, it seems that fall is on the way in. Goodbye summer.
Fall has always been my favorite time of year, but I’m even happier than usual to see it arrive this year. This has been a busy summer, a hard summer and I am ready for the change. I’m thrilled by the return to home and hearth that naturally occurs this time of year.
This evening, I finally got around to uploading the hundreds of photos that were languishing on my camera’s memory card, and it struck me: Even with all of the difficulty the last months have brought, there have been so many pockets of joy. We’ve spent time together as a family having wonderful adventures that I just never got around to sharing. Since this little blog o’ mine is a family journal of sorts, I feel a need to remedy this.
All this week, I’ll be sharing with you some of those adventures, starting with this one, natural tide pools on the Oregon coast:

What adventures did you have this summer?
An Enchanting Garden
Happy Labor Day!
In honor of this day, I’d like share with you a wee bit of labor GW and I engaged in over the weekend.

We built a fairy garden to bring a bit of nature into our home.
Here’s the view from above:

With the exception of the tiny tropical “tree” we spent a whopping $1.99 on and the $1.00 fairy house from the Chinese market, all of the materials used were found in or around our home. Grass was created from moss we harvested from around our mailbox. A couple of lovely weeds from the yard complete the shrubbery.
We used a bit of hot glue and twigs to form the bridge spanning a pebbled creek bed. A tiny walking path leads from the house to the shell pond (treated with a layer of spray shellac to keep from leaking). More shells, this time used as bowls, adorn the stone table. A few more stones and shells round out the scene.

I’m not sure which of us is more enchanted with our new toy. Imagine our surprise when a fairy moved right in! It appears as though she spent so much time enjoying her new home that she completely forgot to bring in the washing.
Don’t miss out. Why not have new posts delivered to your inbox?
Savasana-AAA!
Sorry about the long silence.
I have felt the need for it – a need to draw inward, a need to focus on my family.
We are fine. Losing W’s dad has been painful but we have been grateful for those that have offered their support and prayers. Thank you.
In other news, all of the tension and emotion of the last couple of months has really done a number on my body. My back is tight and my front is flabby. Lovely…
I started doing yoga again, here at home. There is a great series of half-hour videos on you-tube by yoga today. I’d love to start going to a studio again, but for now this is working out great. This morning I lay in savasana or corpse pose (beautiful imagery, isn’t it?) to relax at the end of my – what do I call it? Workout doesn’t sound right, but neither does practice – at the end of my other… yoga… stuff.
I focused on my breathing, trying to clear my mind. It was wonderful and so needed.
Breath.
Relax.
Breathe.
RelaAAAAA!
Note to self: next time check for spiders in the room. It is not very meditative to have one scurry up your bare arm.
Maybe tomorrow I’ll wear something like this:
Namaste.
